Day 18: The Sketch Goes Off Script

Backstage at a school festival in Villahermosa, Tabasco, Aitana (A), a girl playing a TV presenter in her class's comedy sketch, comes off stage to her teacher Georgina (B), who is keeping an eye on the clock.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Maestra, ¿oyó cómo se rieron con lo del ventilador? Y ese chiste ni venía en el guion.

    Miss Georgina, did you hear how they laughed at the fan bit? And that joke wasn't even in the script.

    Precisamente, Aitana: el guion dice “Buenas noches, este es su noticiero”, no cinco minutos de monólogo.

    Exactly, Aitana: the script says “Good evening, this is your news,” not five minutes of stand-up.

    Pero es que cuanto más improviso, más se ríen, y el que manda es el público, ¿no?

    But the more I improvise, the more they laugh, and the audience is the boss, right?

  4. B

    Y cuanto más se ríen, más nos atrasamos: tercero B lleva media hora formado para su bailable.

    And the more they laugh, the further behind we get: Class 3B has been lined up for their dance for half an hour.

  5. A

    No se enoje, maestra. Nomás déjeme el chiste del clima, que es el mejor, y ya me porto bien.

    Don't be mad, Miss Georgina. Just let me do the weather joke, it's the best one, and then I'll behave.

  6. B

    A ver, dímelo rápido. Terminado el chiste, sales por la izquierda y se acabó.

    OK, tell me, quickly. Once the joke's over, you exit left and that's that.

  7. A

    Ahí va: “Pronóstico para Villahermosa: mañana, calor; el sábado, calor; y el domingo, cambio drástico: calor con humedad”.

    Here goes: “Forecast for Villahermosa: tomorrow, hot; Saturday, hot; and on Sunday, a dramatic change: hot and humid.”

    Ese se queda, y hasta lo voy a poner en el guion. Eso sí, dicho el pronóstico, sales, y el del ventilador te lo guardas para Navidad.

    That one stays, and I'm even putting it in the script. But remember, once the forecast's said, off you go, and you save the fan one for Christmas.

    ¡Sí, maestra! En Navidad el pronóstico es igualito, pero con suéter.

    Yes, Miss Georgina! At Christmas the forecast's exactly the same, but in a sweater.
