Day 121: The IVA on My New Sneakers

After a civics class at a middle school in Tehuacán, Puebla, Nicolás (A), a student, asks his civics teacher, Osvaldo (B), about the receipt for his new sneakers.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.

    Excuse me, can you explain something? The receipt for my sneakers has 160 pesos of IVA on it.

    Es el impuesto al valor agregado, el cual se cobra en casi todo lo que compras.

    It's value-added tax, which is charged on almost everything you buy.

    ¿Y la tienda en la que los compré se queda con ese dinero?

    And does the store where I bought them keep that money?

    No, se lo entrega al SAT, y el gobierno lo reparte: escuelas como esta, y hasta mi sueldo.

    No, it hands it over to the SAT, the tax office, and the government divides it up: schools like this one, and even my salary.

    O sea que con mis 160 pesos le pagué una hora de clase, ¿no?

    So my 160 pesos paid you for an hour of class, then?

    Más o menos, así que te la doy completita, con todo y tarea.

    More or less, so you're getting the whole hour, homework and all.
