Day 141: Twenty Percent More in Tulum

In Tulum, Lilia (A), who has rented an apartment there for four years, goes to see her landlord, Don Eleazar (B), about her lease, which runs out in June; don is a title of respect.

How to study this lesson 3 steps

    Don Eleazar, your son told me you're raising my rent twenty percent in June.

    Pues sí, fíjese que en Tulum todo ha subido: el predial, el agua, el mantenimiento.

    Well, yes, you see, everything in Tulum has gone up: the property tax, the water, the maintenance.

    ¿No estará pensando en rentarlo a turistas por noche? Le pagarán el triple, ¿no?

    You wouldn't be thinking of renting it out to tourists by the night, would you? I bet they'd pay you three times as much.

    No le miento, ya me lo propusieron. Pero los turistas hacen fiesta y rompen todo.

    I won't lie to you, it's been suggested to me. But tourists throw parties and break everything.

    Me molesta que no me lo haya dicho usted, después de cuatro años de pagarle a tiempo.

    It bothers me that you didn't tell me yourself, after four years of paying you on time.

    Tiene razón, me apena que se haya enterado así. A ver, ¿qué me propone?

    You're right, I'm sorry you found out like that. OK then, what do you suggest?

    Un diez por ciento y un contrato de dos años. Así usted se ahorra las fiestas, y yo, la mudanza.

    Ten percent and a two-year lease. That way you're spared the parties, and I'm spared the move.
