Day 150: Downsizing Near the Pharmacy

At a pharmacy in Chetumal, Doña Susana (A), an older customer, buys her medicines from Rodrigo (B), the young pharmacist who knows her well (doña is a title of respect used with an older woman's first name).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    My blood pressure pills, please, young man, and some ointment for my knees; they're really worn out.

    Aquí tiene, doña Susana. ¿Y todavía sube diario las escaleras de su casa?

    Here you are, Doña Susana. And do you still climb the stairs at home every day?

    Ya no por mucho: la puse en venta. Busco un departamento que tenga elevador o que esté en planta baja.

    Not for much longer: I've put it up for sale. I'm looking for an apartment with an elevator, or one on the first floor.

    Fíjese que en el edificio de mi tía venden uno en planta baja, bien espacioso.

    As it happens, there's a first-floor one for sale in my aunt's building, and it's nice and roomy.

    ¿De veras? Nada más que no quiero salirme de la colonia: esta farmacia ya es mi segunda casa.

    Really? But I don't want to leave the neighborhood: this pharmacy is practically my second home.

    Está a dos cuadras. Si quiere, le paso el número de mi tía.

    It's two blocks from here. If you like, I'll give you my aunt's number.
