Day 152: Butterflies Before Monday's Ceremony

At an elementary school in Colima, Thiago (A) tells his classmate Zoé (B) about the honores a la bandera, the flag ceremony Mexican schools hold every Monday, where he has to recite a poem.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Zoé, el lunes me toca recitar el poema en los honores a la bandera, y ya no quiero.

    Zoé, on Monday I've got to recite the poem at the flag ceremony, and I don't want to anymore.

    ¿Por qué? Si lo dices bien bonito; hasta la maestra te felicitó.

    Why? You say it really nicely; even the teacher congratulated you.

    Ya me lo había aprendido de memoria, y hoy en el ensayo se me borró la segunda estrofa.

    I'd already learned it by heart, and today at the rehearsal the second verse went right out of my head.

    Uy, a mí me pasó igualito en el festival de primavera. ¿Qué es lo que más te asusta?

    Oh, exactly the same thing happened to me at the spring festival. What scares you most?

    Me da miedo que se rían de mí enfrente de toda la escuela.

    I'm scared they'll laugh at me in front of the whole school.

    Mira, antes de hablar respiro despacito, contando hasta cuatro, y me imagino a todos en pijama.

    Look, before I speak, I breathe really slowly, counting to four, and I imagine everyone in their pajamas.

    ¿Hasta al director? ¡Ahora me da miedo que me gane la risa!

    Even the principal? Now I'm scared I'll burst out laughing!
