Day 165: Student Volunteers at Tax Time

In April at the Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa in Culiacán, Eloy (A) and Arleth (B), accounting students who volunteer at the campus tax help desk, talk to their professor, Cristina (C), about a man who came in the day before; the SAT is Mexico's tax authority.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Maestra, ayer vino al módulo un señor que tendría unos setenta años, y no pudimos ayudarlo.

    Yesterday a man who must have been about seventy came to the help desk, and we couldn't help him.

  2. B

    Serían como las cinco. Quería terminar la declaración en diez minutos, con la contraseña bloqueada.

    It must have been about five. He wanted to finish his tax return in ten minutes, with his password blocked.

    Ya me imagino el drama. ¿Y en qué los puedo ayudar, jóvenes?

    I can just imagine the drama. And how can I help you two?

    Buscamos a alguien que conozca bien el portal del SAT y pueda venir en las tardes.

    We're looking for someone who knows the SAT website well and could come in the afternoons.

    Y dijo que hoy regresaría con su hija, que es contadora y, según él, bastante regañona.

    And he said he'd come back today with his daughter, who's an accountant and, according to him, quite a nag.

    ¿Regañona? Pues la contadora regañona soy yo, y yo misma lo mandé con ustedes para que practicaran.

    A nag? Well, I'm the nagging accountant, and I sent him to you myself so you'd get some practice.

    ¿Es su papá? Entonces ya sabemos quién nos va a echar la mano hoy a las cinco.

    He's your dad? Then we know who's going to give us a hand at five today.
