Day 184: Teaching Adults to Read

In Campeche, Bertha (A) and Otilia (B), retired teachers and old friends, run a volunteer reading and writing group for adults in Bertha's garage; don is a title of respect used with an older man's first name.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Did you hear about Don Nicomedes? Yesterday he read us the whole front page.

    ¡Qué gusto! A sus setenta años, y en marzo ni su nombre sabía escribir.

    How wonderful! At seventy, and in March he couldn't even write his own name.

    Y anda tan orgulloso que quiere sacar su certificado de primaria para enseñárselo a sus nietos.

    And he's so proud that he wants to get his elementary school diploma so he can show it to his grandchildren.

    Si sigue así, lo saca el año que entra. Sin embargo, ya no cabemos en tu cochera.

    If he keeps this up, he'll get it next year. However, we can't all fit in your garage anymore.

    Por eso te busqué: el párroco nos presta el salón de la parroquia los jueves.

    That's why I came to find you: the priest will lend us the parish hall on Thursdays.

    ¿Otro grupo, es decir, otra tarde a la semana con este calor? Si se anotan cinco, cuenta conmigo.

    Another group, that is, another afternoon a week in this heat? If five people sign up, count me in.

    Cinco ya tengo: la esposa de don Nicomedes y cuatro vecinas. Él mismo las invitó.

    I've already got five: Don Nicomedes's wife and four neighbors. He invited them himself.
