Day 32: Grasshoppers at the Oaxaca Market

On vacation in Oaxaca, Aitana (A), a young girl, and her mother Berenice (B) talk over everything they tried at the market, including chapulines, toasted grasshoppers.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Mom, I'd never eaten grasshoppers before, and it turns out they're the best thing in the market!

    ¿Mejores que el quesillo? Hace rato ni querías verlos.

    Better than the quesillo? A little while ago you wouldn't even look at them.

    Es que no sabía que llevaban limón y chile. Lo único raro son las patas.

    I didn't know they had lime and chili on them. The only weird part is the legs.

    Well, the same happened to me. And the worst thing, in your opinion?

    El tejate. Sabía a tierra mojada, ¡qué asco!

    The tejate. It tasted like wet dirt, yuck!

    ¿Ah, sí? Pues cuando regresé con las servilletas, ya te habías tomado el mío.

    Oh, really? Well, when I came back with the napkins, you'd already drunk mine.
