Day 34: Ten Questions at the Cousin's Wedding

At the bus station in Villahermosa, AgustĂ­n (A), a man waiting for the bus to Tenosique, strikes up a conversation with Alondra (B), a young woman going home for her cousin's wedding.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    With a present that size, you must be going to a wedding, right?

    A la de mi primo. Ya los oigo: “¿Y tú para cuándo?”

    My cousin's. I can hear them already: “So when's it your turn?”

    Se la habrán hecho mil veces, ¿no? A mí todavía me la hacen.

    They'll have asked you that a thousand times, won't they? They still ask me.

    Ojalá no le hayan contado a mi abuela que terminé con mi novio.

    I just hope they haven't told my grandma I broke up with my boyfriend.

    Mi truco es contestar: “Cuando encuentre a alguien que cocine como usted, tía”.

    My trick is to answer: “When I find someone who cooks like you, Auntie.”

    Le robo el pretexto, aunque con mi tĂ­a no funcionarĂ­a: cocina horrible.

    I'm stealing that excuse, though it wouldn't work with my aunt: she's a terrible cook.
