Day 36: Social Service in the Sierra

On a bus from Zacatecas up into the sierra, Amanda (A), a medical student heading for her year of social service (the placement Mexican medical students do before they graduate) at a village clinic, sits next to Delia (B), who lives in the village.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Disculpe, ¿allá hay señal? Voy a hacer mi servicio social en la clínica.

    Excuse me, is there any signal up there? I'm going to do my social service at the clinic.

    Nomás en la plaza, doctora. Sin señal, ¿cómo le haría?

    Only in the square, doctor. How would you manage without any signal?

    Ni me lo diga. Si viviera tan aislada, me moriría de aburrimiento.

    Don't even say it. If I lived that cut off, I'd die of boredom.

    Pues yo, si viviera en la ciudad, me volvería loca del ruido.

    Well, if I lived in the city, the noise would drive me crazy.

    ¡Ay, no! Se me acabó la pila, y se me olvidó el cargador.

    Oh no! My battery died, and I forgot my charger.

  6. B

    No se apure: mi hijo tiene uno. Vivimos junto a la clínica.

    Don't worry: my son's got one. We live next to the clinic.
