Day 46: In Line for the Water Tanker

In a street in Iztapalapa, Mexico City, Genaro (A), who lives on the next street, waits with his buckets for the water tanker beside Saúl (B), a young man who has just moved to the area.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.

    Are you the one who's just moved into the blue house? Around here, people start lining up early.

    Sí, llegué el sábado. ¿Siempre se reparte así el agua, con pipa?

    Yes, I got here on Saturday. Is the water always handed out like this, from a tanker?

    Sí, cuatro cubetas por familia. Si hubieran arreglado la tubería hace años, no estaríamos aquí.

    Yes, four buckets per family. If they'd fixed the pipes years ago, we wouldn't be standing here.

    ¿Cuatro? Si me lo hubieran dicho, habría traído más de una.

    Four? If someone had told me, I'd have brought more than one.

    Of course. Water may be short around here, but good neighbors aren't.
