Day 59: Replacing a Fifteen-Year-Old Flip Phone

At a phone store in Cuautla, Marisela (A) asks Joana (B), a young sales clerk, to help her choose a smartphone for her mother.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    I'm looking for a cell phone for my mom. I want it to be really easy to use.

    Claro. ¿Y su mamá qué usa ahorita?

    Of course. And what does your mom use right now?

    Lleva quince años usando uno de tapita, y solo contesta llamadas.

    She's been using a flip phone for fifteen years, and she only answers calls on it.

    Entonces le recomiendo este: pantalla grande, letra enorme y batería para dos días.

    Then I'd recommend this one: a big screen, huge text and a battery that lasts two days.

    Ojalá que aprenda a hacer videollamadas. Mi hermano lleva un año viviendo en Canadá.

    I hope she learns to make video calls. My brother's been living in Canada for a year.

    Tráigala el sábado y yo se lo configuro. Eso sí, que no tire todavía el de tapita.

    Bring her in on Saturday and I'll set it up for her. Just one thing: she shouldn't throw the flip phone away yet.
