Day 62: Rainwater for the School Garden

At an elementary school in Chihuahua, Elián (A) and his classmate Martina (B) plan their science project on saving water.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Martina, I'd never seen the dam as empty as it was on Sunday.

    Mi abuelo dice que es por la sequía. ¿Hacemos el proyecto sobre el agua?

    My grandpa says it's because of the drought. Should we do our project on water?

    Órale. El agua que cae del techo se desperdicia; podemos juntarla para regar el jardín.

    OK. The water that comes off the roof goes to waste; we can collect it to water the garden.

    Sí, pero necesitamos algo que aguante mucha agua, no unas cubetitas.

    Yes, but we need something that holds a lot of water, not a few little buckets.

    ¿No habrá por ahí un tinaco viejo que ya nadie use?

    Isn't there an old water tank lying around somewhere that nobody uses anymore?

    Hay uno atrás de la dirección, pero no creo que nos lo presten.

    There's one behind the principal's office, but I don't think they'll lend it to us.

    Le preguntamos al director en el recreo. Pero las arañas se las sacas tú, ¿eh?

    Let's ask the principal at recess. But you're getting the spiders out, OK?
