Day 86: Heatwave Advice at the Pharmacy

During a heatwave in Mexicali, Elodia (A), an older customer, asks Abel (B), the young pharmacist, for something for her dizziness.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.

    Joven, ando mareada con este calor. ¿Tiene algo para la presión baja?

    Young man, this heat is making me dizzy. Do you have anything for low blood pressure?

    ¿Y cuánta agua toma, señora? A 46 grados uno suda muchísimo.

    And how much water are you drinking, ma'am? At 46 degrees Celsius you sweat a huge amount.

    Poca. El doctor me dijo que tomara más, pero solo hay agua de noche.

    Not much. The doctor told me to drink more, but we only get water at night.

    Ah, para no ir tanto al baño, ¿verdad? Pero más vale eso que el hospital.

    Ah, so you don't have to go to the bathroom so often, right? But better that than the hospital.

    Eso dice mi hija. Dijo que vendría en la noche a llenarme cubetas.

    That's what my daughter says. She said she'd come over at night to fill buckets for me.

    Le recomiendo que se lleve este suero para reponer sales; tómelo a traguitos.

    I'd recommend you take this rehydration drink to replace your salts; sip it slowly.

    Deme dos, joven. Así mi hija ya no me regaña por teléfono.

    Give me two, young man. That way my daughter will stop scolding me on the phone.
