Day 89: Card Tips and the Taxman

At a seafood restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, Gemma (A), a regular customer who is an accountant, notices that her usual waiter, Gabriel (B), looks worried.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Gabriel, hoy lo veo muy serio. ¿Pasó algo?

    Gabriel, you look very serious today. Has something happened?

    Ay, contadora, mi jefe nos dijo que las propinas con tarjeta se pagarían por nómina.

    Oh, my boss told us that tips paid by card would be paid through payroll.

    ¿Y eso le preocupa? ¿Qué más les dijo?

    And that worries you? What else did he tell you?

  4. B

    Que me descontarían impuestos. Mi compañero dice que así voy a ganar menos.

    That they'd take taxes out. My coworker says I'll earn less that way.

  5. A

    Sí le van a retener impuestos, pero con sus recibos va a poder comprobar ingresos.

    Yes, they'll withhold taxes, but with your pay stubs you'll be able to prove your income.

  6. B

    ¿O sea que así sí me prestarían para la moto? Entonces, que me descuenten.

    So that way they'd actually lend me the money for the motorcycle? Then let them take it out.
