Day 91: Dad Says He'll Come for Christmas

At an elementary school in Jerez, Zacatecas, Alejandra (A), a student, tells her teacher, Maricela (B), about a phone call from her dad, who works in Atlanta.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Ms. Maricela, you asked us for a letter to someone who lives far away, didn't you?

    Sí, Alejandra, para el viernes. ¿Ya sabes a quién?

    Yes, Alejandra, for Friday. Do you know who to write to yet?

    A mi papá. Anoche nos habló desde Atlanta y dijo que vendría para Navidad.

    My dad. He called us from Atlanta last night and said he'd come home for Christmas.

    ¡Con razón estás tan emocionada! ¿Y qué le vas a contar?

    No wonder you're so excited! And what are you going to tell him?

    Que ya techaron el segundo piso. Me pidió que se lo dibujara, porque no lo conoce.

    That the upstairs has a roof now. He asked me to draw it for him, because he's never seen it.

    Uy, pero una carta a Atlanta tarda semanas. ¿Y si él llega antes?

    Oh, but a letter to Atlanta takes weeks. What if he gets here first?

    Pues se la doy cuando llegue, y se la leo yo.

    Then I'll give it to him when he gets here, and read it to him myself.
