Day 1: The Bike Lane Outside Our Door

At home in Guadalajara's Colonia Americana, Danna (A) tells her older sister Ariadna (B), who shares a car with her, that the parking on their street is about to go.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    ¿Ya viste el aviso? Van a quitar el estacionamiento para poner una ciclovía.

    Have you seen the notice? They're going to get rid of the parking to put in a bike lane.

    ¿Y el carro dónde lo dejamos? Actúan como si nadie en Guadalajara manejara.

    And where do we leave the car, then? They act as if nobody in Guadalajara drove.

    A pesar de que perdemos el lugar, estoy a favor: los ciclistas se juegan la vida.

    Even though we lose our parking space, I'm in favor: cyclists are taking their lives in their hands.

    Por más que me lo expliques, no me convence: la obra va a desquiciar el tráfico.

    However much you explain it, I'm not convinced: the construction will throw the traffic into chaos.

  5. A

    Si bien los primeros meses serán una lata, a la larga habrá menos carros.

    Granted, the first few months will be a pain, but in the long run there'll be fewer cars.

  6. B

    Bueno, lo reconozco: si hubiera una ruta segura hasta mi oficina, me iría en bici.

    All right, I admit it: if there were a safe route to my office, I'd go by bike.

    Pues la ciclovía nueva pasa a dos cuadras de tu oficina: se te acabó el pretexto.

    Well, the new bike lane runs two blocks from your office, so there goes your excuse.
