Day 107: Gyms That Won't Let You Cancel
On a consumer program on television, the host, Guillermo (A), talks to Eugenia Treviño (B), a lawyer from Profeco, Mexico's consumer protection agency, Francisco Salcido (C), who owns a chain of gyms, and Mayra (D), a young gym member.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Buenas noches: hoy hablamos de gimnasios cuyos contratos se renuevan solos. Licenciada Treviño, ¿qué tan común es?
Good evening: tonight we're talking about gyms whose contracts renew themselves. Ms. Treviño, how common is this?
-
B
Muy común. Pasado el entusiasmo de enero, la gente deja de ir, pero los cargos siguen llegando.
Very common. Once the January enthusiasm has worn off, people stop going, but the charges keep coming.
-
C
Un momento: aquí nadie engaña a nadie. Firmado el contrato, el socio acepta la renovación, lo cual nos permite ofrecer mejores precios.
Hold on: nobody's deceiving anybody here. Once the contract is signed, the member accepts the renewal, which allows us to offer better prices.

A
Aquí tenemos a una socia con su contrato. Mayra, ¿nos lee la cláusula de cancelación?
We have a gym member here with her contract. Mayra, would you read us the cancellation clause?
-
D
Con gusto: “Vencido el plazo, la membresía se renovará por un año, salvo aviso por escrito con sesenta días de anticipación”.
Of course: “Once the term has expired, the membership will be renewed for one year, unless written notice is given sixty days in advance.”
-
B
Esa cláusula es abusiva, y cualquier consumidor puede presentar una queja ante la Profeco.
That clause is abusive, and any consumer can file a complaint with Profeco.
-
C
Coincido, pero esos contratos son de gimnasios piratas; en las cadenas serias no manejamos esas prácticas.
I agree, but those contracts come from fly-by-night gyms; serious chains don't use practices like that.
-
D
Pues qué raro, porque trae el logotipo de su cadena y la firma de un director cuyo nombre sale ahorita en pantalla.
That's odd, because it has your chain's logo on it and the signature of a director whose name is on screen right now.
