Day 111: Interviewing Mom for the School Paper

At home in Campeche, Miriam (A), a newspaper journalist, is interviewed by her young son Luciano (B) for his school paper.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    A ver, se帽or reportero, 驴ya est谩s grabando? Te doy la exclusiva, pero r谩pido, que a las siete entrego mi nota.

    OK, Mr. Reporter, are you recording? You can have your exclusive, but make it quick, because I file my story at seven.

    Primera pregunta: 驴cu谩l fue la vez que m谩s metiste la pata en el peri贸dico?

    First question: what was the worst time you messed up at the paper?

    Cuando le cambi茅 el apellido a la reina del Carnaval. Publicada la nota, me llam贸 toda su familia, y con raz贸n.

    When I got the Carnival queen's last name wrong. Once the story was out, her whole family called me, and rightly so.

    驴Y tu jefe te rega帽贸? Seguro pens贸 que andabas en las nubes.

    And did your boss scold you? I bet he thought your head was in the clouds.

    No, me dijo que los errores no se esconden, se corrigen, y al otro d铆a publicamos la rectificaci贸n.

    No, he told me mistakes aren't hidden, they're corrected, and the next day we printed the correction.

    Entonces te confieso algo: en el peri贸dico escolar ya sali贸 que eres la directora del tuyo.

    Then I've got something to confess: the school paper has already said you're the editor of yours.

    驴Directora? No me tomes el pelo, Luciano: si lo lee mi jefe, me va a ir de la patada.

    The editor? Don't pull my leg, Luciano: if my boss reads that, I'll be in real trouble.

    No es broma, mam谩. Terminada la entrevista, le pido a la maestra una rectificaci贸n, como la tuya.

    It's not a joke, Mom. Once the interview's over, I'll ask my teacher for a correction, like yours.
