Day 117: An ADHD Diagnosis at Twenty-Six
In the apartment they share in Cuernavaca, Viridiana (A) asks her boyfriend Renato (B), 26, who has been secretive all week, what is going on.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

A
Llevas toda la semana muy misterioso, Renato. ¿Me vas a decir qué traes?
You've been very mysterious all week, Renato. Are you going to tell me what's up?
-
B
Te leo el reporte tal cual: “El paciente fue evaluado en tres sesiones y cumple los criterios diagnósticos de TDAH”.
I'll read you the report word for word: “The patient was assessed over three sessions and meets the diagnostic criteria for ADHD.”
-
A
¿TDAH? Pero si desde hace años te vengo diciendo que lo tuyo es puro desorden y flojera.
ADHD? But I've been telling you for years that you're just disorganized and lazy.
-
B
Yo también lo creía. Pero no es flojera: me distraigo con cualquier ruido y me cuesta un montón regresar a lo que hacía.
So did I. But it isn't laziness: any noise distracts me, and it's really hard to get back to what I was doing.
-
A
¿Cuántas veces te habré regañado por cosas que no podías controlar, como las llaves en el refri?
How many times must I have yelled at you for things you couldn't control, like the keys in the fridge?
-
B
No te culpes, Viri: en la primaria me pusieron “el distraído” y hasta yo me lo terminé creyendo.
Don't blame yourself, Viri: in elementary school they nicknamed me “the scatterbrain,” and in the end even I believed it.
-
A
¿Y ahora qué sigue? ¿Te van a recetar algo o va a ser pura terapia?
So what happens now? Are they going to prescribe you something, or will it just be therapy?
-
B
Primero terapia, y luego un psiquiatra decide lo del medicamento. Ah, y la psicóloga quiere que vayas a una sesión.
Therapy first, and then a psychiatrist decides about medication. Oh, and the psychologist wants you to come to a session.

Ahí estaré, con libreta y todo. Y la fecha la anoto yo, por si las dudas.
I'll be there, notebook and all. And I'll write the date down myself, just in case.
