Day 134: Grandpa's New Hearing Aids
At the kitchen table at home in Aguascalientes, Micaela (A), a young girl, asks her grandfather Celestino (B) what is in the little box he has brought back from the doctor's.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Grandpa, what do you have in that little box? Are they earphones for listening to music, like mine?

Ya quisiera, mi reina. Son aparatos auditivos: me los recetó la doctora porque resulta que ando medio sordo.
I wish, sweetheart. They're hearing aids: the doctor prescribed them because it turns out I'm a bit deaf.

¿Sordo tú? Con razón le subes tanto el volumen a la tele que mi mamá se pone a gritar.
You, deaf? No wonder you turn the TV up so loud that Mom starts shouting.

Oigo, pero según la doctora ya no percibo los sonidos agudos: los pájaros, la ese y, fíjate, las voces de los niños.
I can hear, but according to the doctor I no longer pick up high sounds: birds, the letter s and, would you believe it, children's voices.

¡Por eso nunca me contestabas! Y yo creyendo que te hacías el sordo para no jugar conmigo.
So that's why you never answered me! And here I was thinking you were playing deaf so you wouldn't have to play with me.

Nunca te ignoré, aunque lo pareciera. Y te confieso que estuve a punto de no ir a la cita, de pura vergüenza.
I never ignored you, even if it seemed that way. And I'll confess I nearly didn't go to the appointment, out of sheer embarrassment.
