Day 153 of 160

Day 153: Canceling Grandma's Phone-Sale Contract

At her grandmother's house in Zacatecas, Arleth (A) goes through the credit card statement of her grandmother, Consolación (B), and finds a monthly charge for an insurance plan that someone sold her over the phone.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Dialogue

Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

  1. A

Abue, desde marzo te cobran $389 al mes por un “seguro de accidentes”. ¿Tú contrataste eso?

Grandma, they've been charging you 389 pesos a month since March for “accident insurance.” Did you sign up for that?

  2. B

¡Cómo crees! Me habló una muchacha muy amable, eso sí, pero le dije clarito que lo iba a pensar.

Of course not! A very nice young woman called me, I'll give her that, but I told her plainly that I'd think about it.

  3. A

Entonces te dieron de alta sin tu consentimiento. Y cuanto más tardemos en reclamar, más meses nos van a cobrar.

Then they signed you up without your consent. And the longer we take to complain, the more months they'll charge us for.

  4. B

Espérame, voy por mi libreta: desde que me jubilé apunto cada llamada rara, con fecha y hora.

Hang on, I'll get my notebook: ever since I retired I've written down every odd call, with the date and time.

  5. A

Eso ayuda; sin embargo, van a alegar que tienen la llamada grabada y que en algún momento dijiste que sí.

That helps; they'll claim, though, that they've got the call recorded and that at some point you said yes.

  6. B

Que la pongan. Tres veces le pregunté si me iban a cobrar, y las tres me juró que no: agente 4471, 12 de febrero.

Let them play it. Three times I asked her whether they'd charge me, and all three times she swore they wouldn't: agent 4471, February 12.

  7. A

Eso ya es venta engañosa, abue. Por lo tanto, no nada más lo cancelamos: vamos a pedir que te devuelvan los casi tres mil pesos.

That's misleading selling, Grandma. So we don't just cancel it: we're going to ask for the nearly three thousand pesos back.

  8. B

Márcales y ponlo en altavoz, mija. Me vieron cara de viejita despistada, pero fui cajera de banco treinta años.

Call them and put it on speaker, honey. They took me for a scatterbrained old lady, but I was a bank cashier for thirty years.
