Day 21: Only Fruit at the Snack Bar

At a corner store in Actopan, Hidalgo, Don Armando (A; don is a respectful title), the store owner, serves Emiliano (B), a boy from the school down the road.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    ¿Otra vez papitas, Emiliano? Media escuela viene a comprármelas.

    Chips again, Emiliano? Half the school comes here to buy them from me.

    Don Armando, ¿por qué ya no se las vende a la cooperativa? Ahí solo hay fruta.

    Don Armando, why don't you sell them to the school snack bar anymore? There's only fruit there.

    Llevo veinte años surtiendo esa cooperativa, pero el año pasado prohibieron la comida chatarra en las escuelas.

    I've been supplying that snack bar for twenty years, but last year they banned junk food in schools.

    ¿Y no le da coraje? ¡Si las papitas eran lo mejor del recreo!

    And doesn't that make you mad? Chips were the best thing about recess!

    Por más que me queje, la regla es la regla. Y, la verdad, si bien vendo menos, ustedes comen mejor.

    However much I complain, rules are rules. And to be honest, although I'm selling less, you kids are eating better.

    Uy, entonces deme unas papitas, antes de que las prohíban aquí también.

    Ooh, then give me some chips, before they ban them here too.

    Ándale, pero de pilón te llevas un mango con chile, a ver si le agarras el gusto.

    All right, but I'm throwing in a mango with chili for free: let's see if you get a taste for it.
