Day 36: Haggling Over a Used Pickup

In a supermarket parking lot in Culiacán, Baltazar (A), who is selling his pickup, meets Luisa (B), a young woman who answered his online ad and took the pickup to her mechanic yesterday.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Buenas tardes, ¿qué le dijo su mecánico? Tiene un solo dueño y servicios de agencia.

    Good afternoon, what did your mechanic say? It's had one owner and been serviced at the dealership.

    Me dijo que la transmisión fallaría pronto, aunque la carrocería estaba impecable.

    He said the transmission would fail soon, though the body was spotless.

    ¿La transmisión? La revisaron en marzo; su mecánico quiere venderle la camioneta de su compadre.

    The transmission? It was checked in March; your mechanic wants to sell you his buddy's pickup.

    Mire el reporte, con fotos. Por eso, y por las llantas lisas, le ofrezco 170,000.

    Look at the report, with photos. That's why, and because of the bald tires, I'm offering you 170,000.

    Tampoco la voy a malbaratar: se la dejo en 185,000, siempre y cuando me pague hoy.

    I'm not going to give it away, either: you can have it for 185,000, as long as you pay me today.

    Con tal de que me entregue la factura original, le transfiero aquí mismo.

    Provided you hand over the original invoice, I'll transfer the money right here.

    Trato hecho. Y si la transmisión aguanta dos años, su mecánico me debe una disculpa.

    Deal. And if the transmission lasts two years, your mechanic owes me an apology.
