Day 50: My Class Visited the City Council
At home in Mexicali, Ian (A), an elementary school student, tells his father Javier (B) about his class's visit to a session of the Cabildo, the city council.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

Even though it was really boring at first, I learned a lot: a council member explained to us how they vote on proposals.

And what did he tell you? Tell me all about it: after all, I'm the one who pays the property tax.

Nos dijo que votaban a mano alzada y que muchas propuestas se aprobaban por unanimidad.
He told us they voted by a show of hands and that a lot of proposals were passed unanimously.

¿Y qué decidieron? Tu maestra nos escribió que ese día votarían lo de los domos para las escuelas.
And what did they decide? Your teacher wrote to us that they'd be voting on the shade roofs for the schools that day.

Um... however much I think about it, all I remember is that the sandwiches were ham.

Ay, Ian, por mucho que te hayan gustado, esos sándwiches no te van a dar sombra en el recreo.
Oh, Ian, however much you liked them, those sandwiches won't give you any shade at recess.
