Day 59: Tequila for the Japanese Market
At a distillery office in Tequila, Jalisco, Hernán (A), the export manager, meets two young members of his team, Karla (B) and Jairo (C), to go over the brand's first shipment to Japan.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

Ya revisé su plan para Japón: los costos, el precio y el envío de marzo cuadran.
I've been through your plan for Japan: the costs, the price and the March shipment all add up.

Gracias, licenciado. Solo falta el etiquetado: allá la normativa exige que los datos vayan en japonés.
Thank you, sir. There's just the labeling left: over there the regulations require the details to be in Japanese.

Eso lo resuelve el distribuidor, ¿no? Por cierto, ¿con cuál estamos tratando?
The distributor will take care of that, won't they? By the way, which one are we dealing with?

Este... con ninguno todavía. Dimos por hecho que usted tendría algún contacto allá.
Um... none yet. We took it for granted that you'd have a contact over there.

¿Yo? En Japón no conozco a nadie que venda tequila, ni a nadie que me deba un favor.
Me? I don't know anyone in Japan who sells tequila, or anyone who owes me a favor.

Ni modo que traduzcamos la etiqueta nosotros: aquí no hay nadie que hable japonés, ¿o sí, Jairo?
We can hardly translate the label ourselves: there's nobody here who speaks Japanese, is there, Jairo?

Nomás el del anime, con subtítulos. Si la empresa me pagara un curso, en un año les traduciría hasta el contrato.
Only anime Japanese, and with subtitles. If the company paid for a course, in a year I'd translate even the contract for you.

Si tuviéramos un año, con gusto. Por lo pronto, el envío de marzo se queda en la bodega.
If we had a year, gladly. For now, the March shipment stays in the warehouse.
