Day 6: Golden Age Movies at the Pharmacy

At a pharmacy in Coyoacán, Doña Amalia (A; doña is a respectful title for an older woman), a retired film critic, chats with Axel (B), the young pharmacist filling her prescription.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Oiga, Axel, ¿por fin vio la nueva versión de aquel clásico de los cuarenta?

    Tell me, Axel, did you finally see the new version of that classic from the forties?

    ¡Me encantó, doña Amalia! A pesar de que dura tres horas, se me pasó volando.

    I loved it, Doña Amalia! Even though it's three hours long, it flew by.

    A mí me pareció bonita, pero hueca. Si bien la fotografía es impecable, el guion no tiene alma.

    I found it pretty, but hollow. While the cinematography is flawless, the script has no soul.

    ¿Usted cree? Para mí lo mejor fue la actuación.

    Do you think so? For me the best thing was the acting.

    Ay, joven, actúan como si fuera una telenovela: puros gritos, lágrimas y pausas dramáticas.

    Oh, young man, they act as if it were a soap opera: nothing but shouting, tears and dramatic pauses.

    Pero por más que la critique, la sala estaba llena y la gente salió aplaudiendo.

    But however much you criticize it, the theater was full and people came out applauding.

    Ya sé, yo también fui. Aquí entre nos, la vi dos veces, pero no se lo diga a nadie.

    I know, I went too. Between you and me, I saw it twice, but don't tell anyone.
