Day 79: My Son Plays the Interviewer

At home in Villahermosa, the night before a job interview, Judith (A) is going over her answers when her young son Jacobo (B) comes to join her.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Mañana es la entrevista final, y la reclutadora me advirtió que sería la más exigente.

    Tomorrow's the final interview, and the recruiter warned me it would be the most demanding.

    Vamos a practicar: yo soy el entrevistador. Primera pregunta: si fueras un animal, ¿cuál serías?

    Let's practice: I'm the interviewer. First question: if you were an animal, which one would you be?

    ¡Esa me la hicieron en la primera ronda! Y me pidieron que les hablara de un error y de cómo lo resolví.

    They asked me that one in the first round! And they asked me to talk about a mistake and how I fixed it.

    ¿Y qué contestaste? ¿Que una vez se te quemó el arroz y pediste pizza?

    And what did you say? That you once burned the rice and ordered pizza?

    Casi. Les hablé de un reporte que entregué tarde, aunque no creo que haya sido la mejor respuesta.

    Almost. I told them about a report I handed in late, though I don't think that was the best answer.

    Ahora una difícil: ¿cuál es tu mayor debilidad? Y no se vale decir que el pan dulce.

    Now a hard one: what's your biggest weakness? And you're not allowed to say pastries.

    Que tiendo a acaparar el trabajo. Mi jefa anterior siempre me pedía que delegara más.

    That I tend to keep all the work to myself. My last boss was always asking me to delegate more.

  8. B

    Estás contratada. Y ahora, a dormir: una candidata desvelada no le sirve a ninguna empresa.

    You're hired. And now, off to bed: a candidate short on sleep is no use to any company.
