Day 96: A Nephew's Guaranteed Investment

At a community center in Toluca, Luis Ángel (A), a young volunteer financial advisor, helps Doña Evangelina (B; doña is a respectful title), a retired woman, read the papers for an investment her nephew has recommended; the CNBV is Mexico's banking and securities regulator.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Let's see, Doña Evangelina, they're guaranteeing you a return of ten percent a month here?

    Eso me prometió mi sobrino, mijo, pero con esta letra tan chiquita no le entiendo nada.

    That's what my nephew promised me, dear, but with print this small I can't make any of it out.

    Diez al mes son más de ciento veinte al año, y un banco serio no le da ni la décima parte.

    Ten a month is over a hundred and twenty a year, and a reputable bank won't give you even a tenth of that.

    Por eso es buen negocio, ¿no? Dice que invierten en criptomonedas y que no hay pierde.

    That's why it's a good deal, isn't it? He says they invest in cryptocurrencies and you can't lose.

    Eso me preocupa: nadie garantiza tanto, a menos que les pague a los primeros con el dinero de los nuevos.

    That's what worries me: nobody guarantees that much, unless they're paying the first investors with the new ones' money.

    ¿Me estás diciendo que es un fraude? Mi sobrino metió ahí sus propios ahorros.

    Are you telling me it's a fraud? My nephew put his own savings into it.

    Firmado el contrato, no podría sacar nada en dos años. Y esa empresa ni aparece en el padrón de la CNBV.

    Once the contract's signed, you couldn't take anything out for two years. And that company isn't even on the CNBV's registry.

    Entonces no firmo, a menos que me demuestren que sí están registrados. Y el jueves te traigo a mi sobrino.

    Then I'm not signing, unless they prove to me they really are registered. And on Thursday I'll bring my nephew to see you.
