Day 110: Should Our Chatbot Sound Human?
At a software company in Guadalajara, Mauricio (A), a manager, asks two developers, Tatiana (B) and Omar (C), whether the customer-service chatbot they built for an insurance company should be allowed to sound human without saying it is a bot.
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

A
The insurance company wants its chatbot to sound human and not admit it's a bot. Before I answer, I want to hear what you think.
-
B
I'll tell you right now: no. If someone asks “are you a person?” and the bot says yes, that isn't design anymore: it's deception.
-
C
Nobody's saying it should lie, just that it shouldn't announce it. Remember the beta: no sooner had it gone out than complaints fell by half.
-
B
Because users thought they were talking to someone called Mireya, which explains why a lady sent tamales to the office for her.
-
C
And that lady, whose claim had been stuck for three months, had it resolved by Mireya in ten minutes. What does she care whether it was a person or code?
-
A
I confess the tamales were delicious and Turing would be proud. But seriously: if the problem got solved, where's the harm?
-
B
The lady wrote to tell her she was the only one who'd listened to her since she was widowed. Are you going to explain to her that it was a language model?
-
C
With all due respect, that's an isolated case. If it introduces itself as a bot, half of them will ask for a human and the call center goes under.
-
B
Well, let them ask, they're within their rights. And you, Omar, you certainly got mad when your match turned out to be a bot.
-
A
I've heard enough: Mireya stays, but she'll say she's a bot from the first message, which is more honest than a lot of salespeople.
-
C
Fine, but the tamale lady has already invited her to her birthday party. Who's going to break the news to her, you or the bot?
