Day 105: Homesick in His First Semester

At a taquería near the Universidad de Guanajuato one evening, Leonardo (A), a freshman from a small town in Sonora, goes up to Marcos (B), an older student eating alone.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.

    Can I sit with you? I've been eating dinner alone for three weeks, and the loneliness is starting to get to me.

    Claro, siéntate. Por el acento, eres del norte, ¿verdad?

    Sure, sit down. You're from the north, going by your accent, aren't you?

    Sí, de un pueblito de Sonora. Nunca había vivido solo, y extraño muchísimo a mi familia.

    Yes, from a little town in Sonora. I'd never lived on my own before, and I miss my family terribly.

    Te entiendo. En mi primer año, para octubre ya había comprado el boleto de regreso a Chihuahua.

    I know how you feel. My freshman year, by October I'd already bought my ticket back to Chihuahua.

    Seriously? So what made you stay?

    Este grupo, mira: fue fundado por estudiantes del norte, y los jueves hay cena con tortillas de harina.

    This group, look: it was started by students from the north, and on Thursdays there's dinner with flour tortillas.
