Day 128: The Alebrije Parade Even in Rain

At home in Mexico City, Yaretzi (A), a teenager, tells her mother Mireya (B) about Saturday's parade of monumental alebrijes, the brightly painted fantasy creatures of Mexican folk art, along Paseo de la Reforma.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.

    Mom, the alebrije I helped paint is in the parade on Saturday. Can we go?

    ¡Qué emoción, hija! Aunque, fíjate, dicen que va a llover toda la tarde.

    How exciting, sweetie! Although, just so you know, they say it's going to rain all afternoon.

    Me pasé tres sábados en el taller pintándole las alas. Aunque llueva, quiero verlo pasar.

    I spent three Saturdays at the workshop painting its wings. Even if it rains, I want to see it go by.

    Ándale, vamos aunque nos empapemos. ¿Y cuál es el tuyo?

    OK, then, we'll go even if we get soaked. So which one is yours?

    El ajolote morado con alas amarillas. Hay que apartar lugar antes de que se junte la gente.

    The purple axolotl with yellow wings. We need to grab a spot before the crowds build up.

    Sale. Y llevo un letrero enorme para que todos sepan quién le pintó las alas.

    Deal. And I'll bring a huge sign so everyone knows who painted its wings.
