Day 139: Who Waters the Plants at Easter

In Mérida, a young woman (A) and her roommate (B), who are going to Chiapas for Semana Santa, Holy Week, knock on the door of their landlord, Don Tobías (C), who lives downstairs (don is a title of respect).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.

    Don Tobías, nos vamos a Chiapas toda la Semana Santa, y le venimos a pedir un favor.

    Don Tobías, we're going to Chiapas for all of Holy Week, and we've come to ask you a favor.

    Queremos que nos riegue las plantas; es que con este calor necesitan agua diario.

    We'd like you to water our plants; it's just that in this heat they need watering every day.

  3. A

    Y que reciba el gas el martes, es decir, que les abra a los de la pipa.

    And to take the gas delivery on Tuesday, I mean, let the gas truck guys in.

  4. C

    No es molestia, muchachas. Nada más que yo también les quiero pedir algo.

    It's no trouble, girls. But I've got something to ask you too.

    Claro, usted dirá. ¿Quiere que le traigamos algo de San Cristóbal?

    Of course, go ahead. Would you like us to bring you something back from San Cristóbal?

    Al revés: quiero que le lleven unas hamacas a mi hermana, que vive allá. Bueno, cuatro.

    The other way around: I'd like you to take some hammocks to my sister, who lives there. Well, four.

    ¿Cuatro? Íbamos a viajar ligeras, pero bueno, trato es trato.

    Four? We were going to travel light, but oh well, a deal's a deal.
