Day 17: The Condesa House Grandma Didn't Buy

At her grandmother's house in Mexico City, Danna (A) tells her grandmother Herminia (B) that she can no longer afford the rent on her apartment.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Grandma, they raised my rent again. I can't afford it anymore.

    Me duele que pagues tanto. ¡Y pensar que casi compro una casa en la Condesa!

    It hurts to see you paying so much. And to think I nearly bought a house in Condesa!

    ¿Cómo que casi? Si la hubieras comprado, ahora viviríamos ahí.

    What do you mean, nearly? If you'd bought it, we'd be living there now.

    Fue en 1984 y nos la dejaban regalada, pero tu abuelo no quiso.

    It was in 1984 and they were practically giving it away, but your grandpa wouldn't hear of it.

    ¿Y no te da coraje? Hoy ha de valer una fortuna.

    Doesn't that make you mad? It must be worth a fortune now.

    Si hubiera sabido, lo habría convencido. Pero aquí sobra una recámara, mija.

    If I'd known, I'd have talked him into it. But there's a spare bedroom here, sweetie.
