Day 2: Soup for the Widower Upstairs

In an apartment building in Colonia Narvarte, Mexico City, Claudia (B), who lives downstairs, calls on Don Aurelio (A), an older widower who has hardly left his apartment since his wife died (don is a respectful title used with an older man's first name).

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Oh, it's you, Claudia. Come in, excuse the mess.

    I made noodle soup, Don Aurelio, and brought it up to you nice and hot.

    ¡Ay, qué amable! Mi señora me la hacía así cuando me enfermaba.

    Oh, how kind! My wife used to make it for me like this when I was sick.

    Oiga, en el centro comunitario hay un grupo de jubilados. ¿No se anima?

    By the way, there's a group for retired people at the community center. Won't you give it a try?

    No creo que sea para mí, vecina. Dudo que alguien quiera platicar conmigo.

    I don't think it's for me. I doubt anyone would want to chat with me.

  6. B

    Pues el jueves paso por usted, y si no le gusta, nos regresamos.

    Well, I'll pick you up on Thursday, and if you don't like it, we'll come home.
