Day 39: Radio Panel: Will We Ever Retire?
On a radio program in Guadalajara, the host, Rafael (A), asks two guests about saving for retirement: Don Pascual (B), a retired factory worker, and Érika (C), a young freelance designer (don is a title of respect; an Afore is the private fund that holds a worker's retirement savings).
How to study this lesson 3 steps
- Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
- Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
- Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.
Dialogue
Audio recordings are on the way. For now, each lesson is the dialogue with its English translation.

A
Don Pascual, usted ya se jubiló. ¿Le alcanza la pensión?
Don Pascual, you've already retired. Is your pension enough to live on?
-
B
Apenas, pero lo bueno es que empecé a cotizar muy joven.
Just about, but the good thing is that I started paying in very young.
-
A
¿Y usted, Érika? ¿Cómo se imagina a los sesenta y cinco?
And you, Érika? How do you picture yourself at sixty-five?
-
C
Uy, para entonces habré cambiado de trabajo diez veces. Lo difícil es ahorrar sin prestaciones.
Oh, by then I'll have changed jobs ten times. The hard part is saving without any benefits.
-
B
Por eso, lo importante es aportarle a su Afore aunque sea poquito.
That's why the important thing is to pay into your Afore, even if it's only a little.

A
Buen consejo. Yo, la verdad, ni sé en cuál estoy.
Good advice. To be honest, I don't even know which one I'm with.
