Day 83: Lost Among the Pretend Jobs

At a children's museum in Mexico City, Montserrat (A), a young doctor visiting the museum, finds Lía (B), a little girl crying by herself next to the play hospital.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    Hola, chiquita, ¿por qué lloras? ¿Con quién viniste al museo?

    Hi, sweetheart, why are you crying? Who did you come to the museum with?

    Con mi papá. Estaba jugando a la doctora y cuando volteé, ya no estaba.

    With my dad. I was pretending to be a doctor, and when I turned around, he was gone.

    No te preocupes, ahorita lo encontramos. ¿Sabías que yo soy doctora de verdad?

    Don't worry, we'll find him in a minute. Did you know I'm a real doctor?

    ¿De veras? ¿Y usted también jugaba a la doctora cuando era niña?

    Really? And did you pretend to be a doctor too when you were little?

    Todo el tiempo. Mis pacientes eran los peluches con los que dormía.

    All the time. My patients were the stuffed animals I slept with.

  6. B

    ¡Ahí está mi papá! Es el señor con el que está hablando el guardia.

    There's my dad! He's the man the security guard's talking to.

    ¡Qué bueno! Vamos con él, y dile que la doctora te recetó no soltarle la mano.

    Great! Let's go over to him, and tell him the doctor's prescribed never letting go of his hand.
