Day 95: Swapping Shifts at the Paletería

At a paletería, a store selling popsicles, in Morelia, Javier (A) and María Fernanda (B), middle school classmates who work there on weekends, talk after the manager has talked to her.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    What's up with the boss, I wonder? She came out with a scowl on her face.

    Dice que el nuevo renunció y pregunta si puedes cubrir su turno del domingo.

    She says the new guy's quit, and she's asking if you can cover his Sunday shift.

    Estará en la nevería de enfrente, que paga más. ¿Y tú no puedes?

    I bet he's at the ice cream parlor across the street; they pay more. Can't you do it?

    Son los quince de mi prima. No te hagas del rogar: te cubro el sábado.

    It's my cousin's quinceañera. Don't play hard to get: I'll cover your Saturday.

    ¿Nada más? Si también me pasas la tarea de química, trato hecho.

    Is that all? If you let me copy your chemistry homework as well, it's a deal.

  6. B

    Ah, se me olvidaba: dice que ese turno lo paga doble.

    Oh, I nearly forgot: she says she'll pay double for that shift.

    ¿Doble? Me convenciste: quédate con tu sábado, y hasta te paso la tarea.

    Double? You've twisted my arm: keep your Saturday, and I'll even let you copy my homework.
