Day 16: First Week Back From Chicago

At a software company in León, Silvia (A), a team manager, checks how David (B), a new employee who grew up in Chicago and has moved back to Mexico, is settling in.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    How's your first week going, David? How's the team treating you?

    Bien, aunque llevo toda la semana aguantando bromas por mi acento de Chicago.

    Fine, although I've spent the whole week putting up with jokes about my Chicago accent.

    ¿Por su acento? Si bien se le nota, su español es impecable.

    About your accent? Although it does show, your Spanish is impeccable.

    A pesar de que mis papás son de Michoacán, aquí ya me apodaron “el gringo”.

    Even though my parents are from Michoacán, they've already nicknamed me “the gringo” here.

    Ya se les pasará. Mientras, ¿le interesaría llevar las llamadas con los clientes de Estados Unidos?

    They'll get over it. Meanwhile, would you be interested in leading the calls with the US clients?

    Llevo apenas una semana trabajando aquí; ¿no se van a sentir desplazados los demás?

    I've only been working here a week; won't the others feel pushed aside?

    Por más antigüedad que tengan, ninguno negocia en inglés como usted. A ver quién se ríe cuando cierre un contrato.

    However much seniority they have, none of them negotiates in English like you. Let's see who's laughing when you close a deal.
