Day 17: Backdated Invoices at the Firm

At home in Mexico City, Efraín (A) notices that his daughter Jimena (B), a junior accountant at an accounting firm, has come back from work unusually quiet.

How to study this lesson 3 steps
  1. Read the situation under the title. It says who is talking and how they know each other, which decides how politely they speak.
  2. Read the dialogue line by line with its translation, until every line makes sense. Point at (or tap) a Spanish word to see what it means.
  3. Spend at least 30 minutes listening to native Spanish, for example from the Resources page. It doesn't matter if you don't understand it yet.

    What's up, honey? You haven't made a peep since you got in.

    Mi jefe quiere que registre unas facturas de enero como si fueran de diciembre.

    My boss wants me to enter some January invoices as if they were from December.

    ¿Segura? No creo que te lo haya pedido tan descaradamente.

    Are you sure? I can't believe he asked you as brazenly as that.

    Con la puerta cerrada, y según él, así lo hacen todos los despachos.

    With the door shut, and according to him, every firm does it.

    Espero que no hayas capturado ninguna. No quiero que te corran, pero tampoco que te manches las manos.

    I hope you haven't entered any of them. I don't want you to get fired, but I don't want you getting your hands dirty either.

    Todavía no, pero ¿y si lo denuncio? Sin pruebas, sería mi palabra contra la suya.

    Not yet, but what if I report him? Without proof, it'd be my word against his.

    Pídele que te lo mande por correo. En cuanto lo tengas por escrito, tienes tu prueba; si no se atreve, asunto arreglado.

    Ask him to send it to you by email. As soon as you've got it in writing, you've got your proof; if he doesn't dare, problem solved.
